My Walking year is over and I met my target .. TWICE!

Well the 10th April is my “End of Year” for walking and back when I got my HTC Desire and started using CardioTrainer I set myself a target of 500 miles walking for the following year. Even with me being “off the road” for 2 months after my motorcycle accident, I more than made up for the missing miles by having to walk to work during the depths of winter when The McDonaghs were effectively snowed in at the top of our hill.

I went through 500 miles a 5 weeks ago so I set a new revised target of 600 miles before 10th April, and I passed that second target on the 8th! However that now left me with a quandary, what will the target for 2011-12 be?

Hmmmmmm…..

I am tentatively setting that at 1000 miles!

That sounds awfully awfully far …

With that in mind I bought myself a new pair of Hiking books on Saturday, thanks Sister Janet your Birthday Pressie DID go to good use and it was all for me! πŸ™‚

It being a Sunday today I set out on a bit of a dander, planning to do 15 miles along the coast from Portrush to the mouth of the River Bann (The Barmouth) via Portstewart and back. I used my new all aluminium Thermos Flask .. Excellent bit of kit, robust and it keeps 3 big cups of coffee warm for a big long Dander. I also used my new Solar charger and started with 100% phone battery and ended it with 99% after nearly 5 hours of mobile and GPS connection so that was a big #win #win πŸ™‚ It was a gorgeous day, sunny, warm and not too hot. I managed the 15 miles without incident and the legs even the gammy one worked as expected.

Here are some of the piccies I took on the dander, [Click on the image to go to the Facebook gallery)

Portstewart StrandSo only 985 miles to do and only 364 days to do it in πŸ™‚

The Dunbane Trail Claimed :-)

It being my Birthday today I decided that my Sunday Dander should be something different so I did some Googling and found a walk I had never done before now 10 miles away from Casa McDonagh.

So it was that i stuggled out of bed at 8:30 into the silence of a sleeping house, had some breakfast donned the walking boots, coat, camera and walking stick and set out to make the Dunbane Trail my own.

Normally I am a coastal walker, I like being able to see the sea so this walk was a little different for me as it was in the hills and glens that surround the River Bann Valley.
I have to say the local walking club have down a wonderful job with the way marking and styles. However a word to the wise both the Dunblane Hill and Heggarty’s Mountain sections are VERY VERY wet, the path is through a bog so that is not that shocking, however being a bog there is little chance of the path “settling” so it can be a bit hard to find the actual path through the moss and heather.

The heather on Dunbane hill has recently been burnt off, either by accident or design and as a result the path is rather sooty, so not only good boots but a set of gaiters is a good idea as is a stick to prod likely spots to place your feet. It is a good rule to follow when walking in a bog to realise that Sphagnum Moss which grows in nice dense firm looking clumps is usually floating on a nice deep but totally hidden puddle of cold water!

Normally I scud along somewhere around 3.5mph, however this was a walk where the off-road sections where hard going underfoot and my rate fell down to around 2.5 miles per hour.

That being said it is a glorious walk I would heartly recommend but only for those with a little bit of hillwalking experience as it can be tough going for 5 of the 8 miles. That has to be balanced against wonderful views of over most of Northern Ireland and even as far as the mountains of Donegal in the West.

I saw Foxes, Grouse, a Stoat, Skylarks, Hares and several birds of prey and not another soul until I got back to the car park, this is definitly a walk that will be repeated later in the year.

A wee AVI (14mb) of the view from the top of Heggarty’s Mountain

Photos of early Spring at Downhill

Went for a bit of a stroll around The Downhil Mussenden Demense this morning and it was the first non-jumpered walk of the year just a tee-shirt and a walking jacket.

There are times when I forget just how beautiful where I live is, and even now at the very start of spring before nature has started to “Green” up in any significant manner, there is a stark beauty to the landscape and yet there is an excpectation of growth in every tree and plant I pass.

Here are the pictures I took

Do Faith Schools Fuel Sectarianism?

I got up early this morning intending to go for my usual longish Sunday dander and on looking out of the window it was in mid deluge, so I got back into bed and caught some extra ZZZZZZzzzz’s to be woken 2 hours later by one of our cats, Kizz sitting on the pillow and shouting in my ear “FEED ME YOU LAZY BIG LUMP!” Since there was a heavy threat implied in the timbre of the feline entreaties I struggled from the embrace of the quilt and wandered down to the kitchen.

Sipping the first coffee of the day I turned on the TV and on the BBC was a programme I sometimes watch called “The Big Question” on which the presenter Nicky Campbell hosts a series of moral, ethical and religious debates on “Big Questions”. The last 15 minutes of this programme posed the question “Do Faith Schools Fuel Sectarianism?”I would imagine that since the show was filmed in Edinburgh, this question was prompted by the recent trouble at a Glasgow Rangers vs Glasgow Celtic “old firm football match last weekend.

Since the programme allocated only 15 minutes for this subject they didn’t really get into the complexities of the issue so while not heated it was certainly warming-up. Now coming as I do from the spiritual home of Christian Sectarianism this topic made me sit up and take notice. The same debate has been on-going in Northern Ireland for the last 50 years and more.

It occurs to me that there is a need to try and find someone or something to blame for this deeply ugly hatred that bubbles and steams under the surface of life in Northern Ireland and in the some of the cities of Scotland. Education here was and to an extent is still divided into Protestant and Catholic Schools, even the newer Integrated Schools can suffer from the “if you are not for us you are against us” stigma from the more fundamentalist mindsets. This is the same mindset that has lead to me being asked “Are you a Protestant or Catholic Atheist?” with no hint of irony.

The problem I have with this Post’s title is that I cannot remember a time during my education, or that of my son or my friends where the type of naked hatred ofΒ  “the other side” that I saw on the streets of Northern Ireland was taught. There was one RE teacher who did say that “Catholics were not real Christians and as such would go to hell if not saved” in class in front of some Roman Catholic students. He was reported and censured for this, but that was the only occasion I actually heard a teacher be sectarian in class. I have many friends on both sides of the divide and apart from the odd time when an RE teacher or a History teacher would spin a topic to one side or the other, education was and is fair, even-handed and 99% secular in all schools.

I also know a lot of teachers both in Catholic and Protestant schools and to attack the job they do in this way is disengenuous. As an atheist I do question the need for there to be a school defined by a particular interpretation of a God that may or may not exist, but I do not think that the teachers in those schools carry the lion’s share of the blame for the inculcation of sectarian hatred. I believe there is no grand conspiracy of bigotry being actively taught now in any of our schools. At worst the existence of the division that requires separation in education is a symptom of a bigotry that already exists.

So where does it come from this bright hot hatred of the other side? Where are we taught that to sing songs like “We are We are The Billy Boys! We are up to our necks in Fenian Blood! Surrender or you die” at a football match is acceptable in modern society?

Sectarnism comes from a belief that certain differences are dangerous. If we allow our children to believe this then we should not be surprised when they grow up to be bigots.

Childern are a blank canvas on which parents, families, friends and religious congregations paint. Sadly we don’t just paint the good stuff, we add in all the predjudices, hatred and spite that were painted on us by our parents and that we have acquired over time. So when we are looking for someone or something to actually blame we really need look no further than the bathroom mirror every morning.

It is not that often that something raises a tear in my eye…

But this does …
Lucidending has terminal cancer, he is pain and recognizing that his lot will only get worse he has chosen to legally end his own on Tuesday. He was bought an iPad and discovered Reddit and is sharing his thoughts and answering questions on his decision. In his own words…

On Tuesday I’ll finally end my battle with cancer thanks to Oregon’s Death with dignity act. As part of my preparations I’ve ended my pain medication and am trying to regain what little dignity and clarity I can. Who I was doesn’t matter. I’m in pain, I’m tired and I’m finally being granted a small shred of respect

Lucidending was asked

what message or lesson would you like to give to us and the rest of the world?

He replied

That nothing we have is worth hurting anyone else for. It’s all fleeting people. Stop seeing race, color, sex, religion, etc…. They are all just people, and if you try to love them you won’t lose anything.

…. I agree so much with that, well said that man , well said

I wish I had something profound to say … I haven’t … just a Goodbye and a virtual hug from a stranger in Ireland.

Sunday’s Dander

Another Sunday has rolled around and as per the last few weekends I pencilled in Sunday morning as the time when I would set out on a nice long plod around this little part of the universe that I call home. Last week I aimed at and achieved 10 miles without the gammy leg protesting so this week I aimed at somewhere around 15 miles and 3 cheers managed it and the leg held up well, although I have to say that from 13 miles on I was a bit unpleasantly stiff, so I may need to do this a few more times before it becomes totally pleasant.

Click here to see the route I took

Spring is just around the corner and although today was a bit grey at the edges it was mild and pleasant to walk the by-roads of Ulster. Here are some photos that I took on my dander..*(click on the piccie below to go to the FB Gallery)

Nothing like a Nice Long Dander

Sunday's walk Piccies

It was a lovely bright but chilly morning and not being of a mood to waste it, I threw on the coat and went for a nice long wander along the counrty roads around Coleraine. This was my first half decent wander for a while and I am glad to report that the old “Gammy Leg” appears to be back to something like normal as it ached but not too badly even after 10 miles πŸ™‚ which is good and nearly 5 months after the accident about bloody time too!

If you are interested this is the route I took, kudos to CardioTrainer the wonderful Android app I use to record these danders.

I took a load of piccies when I was out and about and if you click on the one above you will be transported to the Facebook gallery with the rest of them. Be Warned I like Trees!

Philosophically Walking

I find that I and Soren Kierkegaard spend a lot of time at odds but I came across this quote the other day and he has gone up in my estimation πŸ™‚ I wonder why ?

“Above all, do not lose your desire to walk: every day I walk myself into a state of well-being and walk away from every illness; I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one can not walk away from it.”

The dark days of Winter take their toll on the “Voice of the McDonaghs”

Indeedy it is February already! Valentines day is past and Valerie’s birthday is just around the corner. Where does the time go? I have a feeling that thes short, grey, damp and cold days just suck the joy of life out of these NornIron folk. Mind you having said that there is a throb, an almost imperceptible quickening of the pace as the days get longer and the sun warmer on it’s infrequent appearances, spring is on the way πŸ™‚

January was not a good month for Niall as his job ended and he joined the growing ranks of the young unemployed, but there are a few jobs on the horizon so we are all crossing our fingers in the hope that the relevant HR departments are impressed by him. Val is girding her loins for the start of gardening season. She got a fandabulous wheelbarrow thingie for Xmas from mum. Seemingly it is specially designed so it has minimal effect on the dwelliongs of the fairies, gnomes and assorted beasties that live at the bottom of the garden, tis always best to be nice to the mythical lifeforms for fear of their dire retributions πŸ˜‰ Val also picked up a bargin power tool in the post Xmas pre VAT rise sale at B&Q, she is now ready for “The Lismurphy Not Quite A Chain Saw Because I Am Not That Tall Electric Hedge Trimmer Massacre” .. The front garden Cotoneaster is trembling!

I am STILL waiting for new of movement on my insurance claim for the bike accident back in September, quite honestly if they moved any slower they would be going backwards. However there have been glimmers of hope as 5 months after the accident the bike has been visited by an assessor who is in agreement with me and my mechanic – it is buggered! Now all I need is a few pennies to get back on the road again πŸ˜‰ The lack of transport has meant that I have had to walk to work 2 or 3 times a week, which to be honest is quite nice. Instead of struggling in to my desk half asleep and bleary, the 40 minute dander door to desk does set you up nicely for the day as I have been arriving awake and ready to face the day with vim and vigour … well ok perhaps Vim, vigour was never my strong point. I am building up to UKLUG11 conference which is at the end of May this year in Manchester. I have submitted two sessions this year and hopefully they go down as well as the session I did at ILUG this year which rather worrying has made it’s way onto YouTube. This year’s being techie will prob not be as well attended πŸ™‚ and it is hard to make up jokes about the wonders of CSS, hard but not impossible πŸ˜€

Right that is this year’s Blogging started … and I will make a point to rant and foam and blether more often this year to try and get the visit count up πŸ˜‰ now where is my guide to WordPress 3.0.5 styling, I think the standard template needs a 2011 tart up… Later folks
