Their hulls cut the grey sea, and their oars beat time like rain.<br>Men shouted, burned, prayed to gods whose names are now wind, Thor, Odin and Freya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I did not care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I thickened my bark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was taller still when Norman stone rose and fell.<br><br>I was broad when Cromwell\u2019s soldiers passed with iron and psalm and smoke.<br><br>I was an adult when when roads were cut, when engines began to hum where once there had been only hooves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I did not care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Humans flickered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They buzzed about my roots in their brief brightness, lived entire lives between one ring of my growth and the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They loved, fought, built, wept. Then they were gone, but I remained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I drank rain.<br>I held soil.<br>I fed squirrel and badger and beetle.<br>That was enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the Close was marked out in white paint and argument, they spared me.<br>They built their brick and hedges in a circle around my shadow.<br>They gave the street my name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I did not ask for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;. but now my heartwood softens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deep within me there is lace where once there was iron hard wood. <br>Storms no longer test me, they warn me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sap rises thinly this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not with fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With wood-knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, I draw what strength remains.<br>I gather sun from the last warm days of autumn.<br>I pull water from soil that has known my roots for a thousand years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I pull what energy I have left and I make three &#8230;.  Three acorns, low on a bending branch.<br>Heavy. Certain. Complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My last act is not defiance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is continuation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She comes at dusk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Morrigan, in her quiet aspect , not war-cry but keening wind. Banshee-soft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She places her palm against my gnarled trunk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOld one,\u201d she whispers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her voice is not sound alone for i hear it clearly. It is river and battlefield and cradlesong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My leaves shiver. A curl passes through them like a final breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou stood,\u201d she says. \u201cThat is enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three acorns loosen and fall. not to earth, into her waiting hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She smiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beside her appears Dian C\u00e9cht, healer of gods, gardener and keeper of silver tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From his satchel he takes a small trowel, bright as a sliver of moon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ten feet to the west, he kneels.<br>The soil parts easily and he plants the first acorn and presses the earth gently closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To the east, he does the same.<br>He pours water carefully from a flask, as though baptising the new life held within.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third he brings to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He finds a crevice in my ancient bark, a hollow where beetles have wintered and moss has made its soft home. He presses the acorn into it and murmurs,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou fed squirrel and badger for a thousand years.<br>Let this be your last gift to the small, fragile creatures who depended on you when winters were hard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I feel it settle within me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then they come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One by one, doors open along Nether Oak Close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carol and Sandy, Michael,  the Patels, all of the humans who saw me everyday.<br>The childern who leaned against my trunk to read their books.<br>The old man who never waves but always looks.<br>The couple who once argued and learned to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They do not know why they walk.<br>But they recognise the calling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They gather on the green and, without instruction, form a ring around me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hands meet hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Silence settles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first time in a thousand years, I notice them fully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not as flicker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not as noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as warmth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deep in my failing heartwood, I am thankful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sap slows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pull toward earth grows stronger than the pull toward sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Morr\u00edgan and Dian C\u00e9cht press their palms to my trunk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRest,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The people break their circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One by one they approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A hand against bark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A forehead bowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some add, \u201cGoodbye.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sun slips low, painting brick and branch gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Humans and gods depart without spectacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Night comes gently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I fall inward , not with crash, but with release as the sun sets for me one last time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sunlight warms the soil west of where I stood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A green shoot presses upward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To the east, another answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two small shoots unfold into the light and greet the sun as I once did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a thousand years more in Nether Oak Close<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nether Oak close, needed one last story to tie it all up and i felt it appropriate for it to be about the oak that stands in the middle of the green, the single entity that binds all the locations in all the stories<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":338,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,18],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-337","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-stories","category-nether-oak-close-stories"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
