Nothing until three p.m., when Mrs Slocum would arrive for her regular check-in with her late husband, David. Plenty of time to strip the bed, get the wash on, and hang it on the line before the weather turned petty, She though &#8220;The life of a part-time psychic is just one long laundry adventure&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was rinsing out her mug when the doorbell chimed. Magdalena frowned.<br><em>No Amazon parcels due today.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she opened the door, the morning took a turn towards what her grandson would say &#8220;WTFery&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A witch, an honest-to-god, storybook witch, stood on her porch. Black robes, pointy hat, the lot. Her expression suggested she\u2019d been inconvenienced by the journey from somewhere improbable. She grimaced as she brushed some glitter off her dress, she muttered &#8220;Fairy dust so 1950!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGood morning, Mrs Maginnis,\u201d she continued in a decidedly witchy voice. \u201cI am Granny Sybil from the Union of D.O.P.E.S. \u2014 Department of Prognostication, Earthsight, and Seers. Terrible acronym. I voted against it. But I\u2019m here to sort you out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magdalena blinked. \u201cSort me out from what?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sybil swept past her as if invited. \u201cFrom yourself, dear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They ended up in the kitchen, where Sybil accepted a mug of tea after sniffing it suspiciously. She waved her hand toward the chair opposite. \u201cSit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magdalena obeyed, more out of shock than politeness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen,\u201d Sybil began, \u201cdid you notice your Sight beginning to dim?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA year ago? Maybe two.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd you told yourself that was because\u2026?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m seventy-two,\u201d Magdalena said. \u201cThings dim.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAge is a postcode, not a limitation,\u201d Sybil snapped. \u201cTry again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magdalena stared at her tea.<br>\u201cI thought\u2019 she paused and wondered about the truth, she found it behind a memory of a tine of spam and a lost key, \u201c\u2026maybe the world didn\u2019t need me as much anymore. People have apps and TikTok psychics. I felt like a relic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd that made you feel irrelevant,\u201d Sybil said gently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSmall,\u201d Magdalena whispered. \u201cLike I was shrinking at the edges.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sybil nodded once, decisive.<br>\u201cWell then. That\u2019s your problem. Fear of irrelevance clogs the Sight like limescale in a kettle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magdalena huffed. \u201cCruel thing for magic to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMagic follows the heart,\u201d Sybil corrected. \u201cYou decided you didn\u2019t matter, so your Sight agreed. You locked the door from the inside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magdalena swallowed hard. The truth stung more because it rang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sybil patted her hand. \u201cCome on. Upstairs with you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat for?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo your linen cupboard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy <em>what<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Sybil was already marching up the stairs. When Magdalena reached the landing, the witch was pressing her palm to the cupboard door like a medium communing with a ghost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s fear here,\u201d Sybil muttered. \u201cSmells of lavender sachets and denial.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s just the airing \u2026\u2026 \u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sybil flung the door open.<br>Nothing catastrophic. Just towels, bedding, and a lifetime of careful folding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLook closer,\u201d Sybil ordered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She prodded a stack of bath towels. Something hissed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magdalena jumped. \u201cWhat was that?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sybil reached in and pulled out a small, smoky creature shaped vaguely like a hedgehog but with the drooping energy of a damp sock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAh,\u201d Sybil said. \u201cA Mop Sprocket. Your self-doubt is nesting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNesting?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey feed on unspoken anxieties. And Egyptian cotton. Stroke it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d rather not \u2026. \u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve fed it for years. Go on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reluctantly, Magdalena stroked it. The creature shuddered, then emitted a soft golden glow, recognizing her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSee?\u201d Sybil said. \u201cFear shrinks when seen. In the dark, it chews holes in your life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before Magdalena could respond, Sybil was rooting deeper into the cupboard. A pearlescent object rolled into her hands , a large shimmering egg, humming softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh my.\u201d Sybil\u2019s eyebrows rose. \u201cAn Unlaid Ambition. Very rare at your age.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magdalena bristled. \u201cMy age?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t get huffy. It means there\u2019s still something you want, though you\u2019ve convinced yourself it\u2019s too late or too silly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The egg glowed brighter, as though offended by her disbelief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt can hatch?\u201d Magdalena breathed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith the right conditions: warm hands, honest wishes, a bit of bravery.\u201d Sybil offered it. \u201cOnly people who still matter grow these.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magdalena took the egg. It was warm. And alive. Something inside her chest loosened for the first time in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They carried the egg downstairs and placed it on the old oak sideboard, beside a stubborn pot plant that refused to die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019ll stay dormant,\u201d Sybil said, \u201cuntil the moment you realise what you still want. Then it will hatch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd until then?\u201d Magdalena asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLive,\u201d Sybil said simply. \u201cNotice things. Be curious. That\u2019s how you feed magic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The egg pulsed once, soft as a heartbeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magdalena shivered. \u201cSybil\u2026 does it ever hatch into something dangerous?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh, certainly,\u201d Sybil said breezily. \u201cBut only if you\u2019re in denial. Be honest with yourself and it\u2019ll be marvellous. Be dishonest and it might explode into regret beetles. Smell like cold rice pudding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSybil!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The witch grinned.<br>\u201cWell, I\u2019m here to prevent that. Now, somewhere in this house is the moment your Sight will come back. Let\u2019s hope it isn\u2019t behind the fridge. Those dust bunnies of despair are militant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magdalena laughed. A real one.<br>For the first time in years, she didn\u2019t feel like a relic at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She felt like a story beginning again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the egg chimed softly, as if agreeing \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Authors Note \u2026 Insert your own time passes special effect here, it is better if you do it yourself, it needs to be long enough to last until the next day<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sybil\u2019s training regimen began the very next morning, whether Magdalena liked it or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou need to wake your intuition,\u201d Sybil declared, marching in through the back door at half past eight. \u201cIt\u2019s been napping for far too long.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat does that involve?\u201d Magdalena asked warily, setting down her toast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cListening. Observing. And occasionally setting fire to things, but we\u2019ll ease into that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magdalena sputtered crumbs. \u201cFire?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sybil waved a hand. \u201cOnly symbolically. Probably.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She plonked a chipped teacup onto the table. Inside was tea, or something pretending to be tea, with a smell that suggested the insides of a clairvoyant\u2019s handbag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDrink,\u201d Sybil said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s smoking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat means it\u2019s working.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reluctantly, Magdalena sipped. The smoke formed little shapes above the cup, spelling out the word <strong>NOTICE<\/strong> before dissipating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh!\u201d she breathed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGood,\u201d Sybil said. \u201cYour Sight isn\u2019t gone. Just sulking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the next few days, Magdalena began seeing odd things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A feather that drifted in circles before pointing toward her.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tea leaves that arranged themselves into symbols she hadn\u2019t seen in years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A spoon in the drawer vibrating whenever she told herself she was \u201ctoo old for this nonsense.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sybil explained each phenomenon with the blunt patience of someone teaching a child to knit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s your intuition tapping you on the shoulder.\u201d<br>\u201cThat\u2019s your confidence stretching its legs.\u201d<br>\u201cThat\u2014\u201d (as a cushion scooted itself an inch to the left) \u201c\u2026is the house getting involved. Don\u2019t encourage it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magdalena felt something blooming inside her. Not youth, she didn\u2019t need that, but vitality. Purpose. A sense of <em>still being in the story.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And from its place on the sideboard, the egg glowed a little brighter each day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It pulsed when she laughed.<br>Chimed softly when she offered kindness to herself.<br>Warmed whenever she let herself imagine wanting something again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was just past midnight when a soft <em>ting\u2026 ting\u2026 ting<\/em> woke her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magdalena shuffled into the living room, slippers whispering on the carpet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The egg sat in its usual place but the glow was no longer steady. It flickered, heartbeat-quick, and the humming sound had deepened into a gentle, insistent purr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She leaned closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A fine crack zigzagged across the shell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh,\u201d she whispered. \u201cOh my goodness\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The air smelled faintly of warm bread and something else something old, wild, and familiar in a way she couldn\u2019t explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The egg rattled once, twice \u2026 and then split with a delicate <em>shhrrrk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A wisp of silvery smoke curled upward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside, curled like a comma waiting for its sentence, was a tiny creature, black as deep velvet, with two closed eyes and a tail too long for its tiny body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A kitten. A miniature witch\u2019s familiar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magdalena gasped, both hands flying to her mouth.<br>\u201cOh, you darling thing\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The kitten blinked open two enormous golden eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It looked at her.<br>Just looked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in that moment, Magdalena felt something click within her chest<br>A door she had closed long ago swinging open, letting in light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The little cat climbed unsteadily out of the egg and tottered straight into her waiting hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWell,\u201d said Sybil\u2019s voice behind her. \u201cThere she is. Your familiar. Took her sweet time, didn\u2019t she?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magdalena turned, blinking. \u201cSybil, how long have you been standing there?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince the first crack. Thought I\u2019d let you have your moment.\u201d Sybil stepped closer, peering at the kitten. \u201cBold eyes. Strong magic. Good appetite, I bet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The kitten squeaked. And attempted to chew Magdalena\u2019s thumb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sybil nodded approvingly. \u201cTold you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magdalena held the warm, purring creature against her chest.<br>\u201cI think\u2026 I think I\u2019ll call her Maeve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The kitten butted her chin, as if the name suited her perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sybil grinned. \u201cA fine witch\u2019s familiar. She\u2019ll keep you sharp. And she\u2019ll let you know if you ever downplay your worth again.\u201d She tapped her nose. \u201cFamiliars can be very strict about that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magdalena laughed softly.<br>The kind of laugh that comes from being known, finally known, by the world again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maeve purred louder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Magdalena Maginnis, psychic, pensioner, and newly witch-adjacent
